Last week, I was present for a baby being born. I was the support person for a close friend during labor, delivery, and recovery. I witnessed my friend’s courage, strength, and love. And I witnessed the fierceness and beauty of her newborn.
It’s stunning (and joyful!) to watch a baby take her first breaths. It’s an event to which you cannot not be present. I’m forever changed by the experience.
While in the hospital, we felt the presence of Omicron. On our second day, 100 hospital staff called in sick. The nurses (who do amazing work!) were scrambling.
I held the baby and appreciated the energy of newborns. Unlike us adults, newborns have no baggage. They have no shame, armor, or pretense. They’re real and beautiful.
As we move through another pandemic surge, exhausted and frustrated, it’s important to remember: Babies are being born. Goodness exists. Love meets love.
