BORN JOY

Thank You

Each Monday, I lead a secular mindfulness group at Oshkosh Correctional Institution. A circle of 20 prisoners of varied ages, races, and backgrounds.

As they enter the room, there’s a collective deep breath. This is a refuge space in the middle of hell. It’s a safe-enough space to reflect, share, and heal.

After the opening meditation, we have a group check-in. Each member shares what’s “up” for them. No cross-talk or advice giving, just bearing witness.

Their honesty, insight, and courage inspire me. As does their gratitude.

Person after person says, “Thank you for showing up in the circle. Thanks for listening. Thanks for caring.” And it’s not bulls**t. It’s real gratitude.

Yesterday, it struck me: Rarely are groups filled with such appreciation.

There’s so much we take for granted.

We assume our friends will be there. We rush through daily life with family. We’re burdened by commitments.

As I sat in the mindfulness circle (in a medium-security prison!), I heard…

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Nothing grand. Just ordinary connection.

There’s so much we take for granted.

Yet we can begin again with a simple pause. A savoring. A noticing.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
